Bridgeport ISD Trustees Call May 2025 Bond Election

At the Feb. 10 board meeting, the Bridgeport ISD Board of Trustees called a $211.6 million single-proposition bond election for May 2025. The proposal includes construction of a new high school on district-owned land, capital improvements and the purchase of buses and vehicles for student transportation.

In the fall, Bridgeport ISD conducted a community engagement survey, seeking input from all families, staff, students and community members about their experiences in Bridgeport ISD. Nearly 500 responses were submitted and served as a springboard for the creation of Bridgeport ISD’s first strategic plan. Out of that work two committees were formed - Student Support/Academic Committee and Facility Planning Committee. The committees were made up of parents & guardians, business leaders, civic leaders, educators & administrators, volunteers, community members, Alumni and retirees.

The May bond is intended to address critical facility updates on all BISD campuses. The package includes up to 18 school buses to replace a large portion of the district's aging bus fleet and up to 5 SUVs for transporting students, as well as capital improvements, and the building of  a new high school to address identified facility and program needs.

The proposal earmarks $183.1 million to construct a new high school building, projected to open in August 2029 to accommodate 1,200 students. The building is proposed to be built on FM 1655 across the street from Weatherford College (Hwy 380) on 73 acres of land owned by BISD. The new high school would include CTE facilities, a 600-seat auditorium, softball/baseball fields and tennis courts.

Building a new high school would allow BMS to move into the current BHS campus and other aging campuses to be repurposed or sold as needed. The new high school being adjacent to Weatherford College could create additional opportunities for dual credit and CTE courses.

The last time Bridgeport ISD voters approved a bond election for facility improvements was in 2009. Capital improvement needs compound and end up costing a community more in construction/labor costs over time. Most Texas school districts do not receive enough state funding to accommodate the required maintenance for aging systems and facilities.

Bridgeport ISD residents must be registered to vote in Texas by April 3 to participate in the May 3, 2025 election. The early voting period is April 22-29.
